2020 Cyclone Festival of Cycling Cancelled

2020 Cyclone Festival of Cycling Cancelled

August 11, 2020 | 1month | GENERAL

The 2020 Cyclone Festival of Cycling has been cancelled due to the ongoing impact of the Coronavirus pandemic. Originally scheduled for June, the Festival had been re-arranged for September, but following meetings by the event’s organising team, the decision to cancel has been taken.

The decision was taken with advice from British Cycling, the governing body of the sport, who also sanction and insure the Festival’s two races and six public rides.

Cyclone organiser Peter Harrison said:

“We’re very disappointed that the Cyclone has been cancelled for 2020. We had hoped, with Coronavirus infection rates coming down in England, that we’d be able to hold the festival on the re-arranged dates.

However, with just over a month to go, we still had serious concerns for the safety of our riders, our volunteers, many of them older and clinically vulnerable, and for the local communities we visit.

In addition, we rely on the support British Cycling, not least to provide insurance for our events. They are working very hard to re-start the sport, but their advice is that, at the moment, they cannot guarantee that they will be able to sanction our races and rides.

We therefore have no alternative to cancel the event.

As ever, we’d like to pass on our heartfelt thanks for the support we have received from every single Cyclone rider, volunteer, sponsor and partner, and from British Cycling, during this difficult year. We plan to be back in 2021.”

British Cycling’s Integrity & Compliance Director / Company Secretary Rod Findlay said:

“Due to continuing uncertainty caused by COVID-19, British Cycling is unable to sanction these events at this time. We have to consider the particular challenges posed by road cycling and the risk to participant and volunteer health as well as the impact on the communities whose roads we use.

Naturally, the decision by Cyclone Cycling to cancel this year’s events will come as a disappointment to many people. I want to reassure them that we are working hard with colleagues across the sport, Sport England and the government to ensure the safe return of sportives and road racing events on the public highway.”

The Cyclone Festival of Cycling is provisionally booked to return on 2nd - 4th July 2021. We'd love to see you there!

Entry Transfers & Refunds

As a not-for profit event, the Cyclone Festival of Cycling relies on the entry fees of entrants. We also rely on a huge band of volunteers who give up their time to organise and run the event.

Looking ahead to 2021, we're very optimistic that the event will be able to go ahead, but we will need as many riders as possible to enter our various public rides. With this in mind, we're appealing to you to carry you entry over to the 2021 event (provisional dates 2-4 July).

That will give us a great start as we look to plan the 2021 Cyclone Festival of Cycling. We also understand that this has been a difficult year for many people and we are also offering full refunds to any riders who want them. Whatever your decision, we are grateful for your support and patience this year and look forward to seeing you in 2021.

If you have entered the 2020 Cyclone Challenge Rides or Tyne 6 Bridges Family Rides, you now have two options:

1/ ENTRY TRANSFER TO 2021 EVENT: Carry your event entry over to the 2021 event. This will help us hugely. If this is your preferred option, you don’t need to do anything – we’ll look after the admin and you’ll be automatically booked onto the same event in 2021 (note, Challenge Ride entries are valid for all four route options in 2021, you can decide on the day).

2/ ENTRY REFUND: If you want a refund, simply email us at info@cyclonecycling.co.uk with your name, address, date of birth and entry ID number, which will be in your original entry confirmation email. Please put "Cyclone Refund" in the subject field.

Entries for the 2021 Cyclone Festival of Cycling will go live on 1st October 2020. Please request your refunds before this date.
