The 2020 Cyclone Festival of Cycling, originally to have been run at the end of this month (June 2020), has been provisionally re-scheduled for late September. The Coronavirus pandemic led to the Festival’s postponement, but with advice from the Government and British Cycling indicating that organised cycling events will be able to resume in late summer and early autumn, the organisers are now putting in place plans to run the event over the weekend of 25th – 27th September.
THE CURRENT SITUATION
The Festival’s organisers have been keeping in touch with British Cycling, who sanction and insure the events, Newcastle Falcons, who provide the one major venue, where we host the Challenge Rides, and local authorities, who oversee the locations visited by the Festival.
British Cycling are currently operating a “rolling suspension” of all forms of organised cycling activity. Racing is currently suspended until 1 September 2020 and sportives and other non-competitive events until 1 August. British Cycling is reviewing the situation every two weeks and has indicated that the suspensions can be both extended or curtailed.
Newcastle Falcons are expecting to resume competitive Rugby in the early autumn and have given the organisers provisional approval to use their stadium and car parks for the Challenge Rides, should other permissions also be given. The organisers are also in touch with local authorities.
Based on the current situation, the Cyclone Festival of Cycling’s organising team are now in the process of planning the Festival for 25-27th September. Additional health and safety measures will be taken, as recommended by the Government, British Cycling and local authorities and in consultation with the Festival’s various venue providers.
ENTRIESEntries for Cyclone Festival events will be made available, through this website – www.cyclonecycling.com - in the very near future, with entries for the Challenge Rides and Tyne 6 Bridges Rides going live at 10am on Friday 19th June/
Riders who have already entered the 2020 Cyclone’s events will be offered the choice between riding the 2020 event in September, or carrying their entries over to the 2021 Cyclone Festival, next summer.
The Cyclone Festival of Cycling will provide regular updates on its website, social media and through e-newsletters to current entrants.
