As you get ready to ride a sportive like the Cyclone Challenge Rides, a checklist is a great way to take some of the stress out of the final preparations, helping you to pack for the event and the weather. There are essentials, bike, helmet, shoes, and socks. But there are also lots of other considerations, which can vary, such as weather, distance, experience and whether you’re riding alone or with friends.

Essential Cycling Equipment:
• Bike: Ensure your bike is in good working order and well-maintained. Tyres and brakes are probably top priorities for a final check over.
• Helmet: Essential for safety and compulsory.
• Shoes: Cycling shoes – check your cleats are not worn or damaged and fastenings are not damaged.
• Socks: pack you riding favourites and spares for post-ride.
• Gloves: Long rides require decent gloves.
• Sunglasses: For sun and insect/grit protection.
• Jersey: Long or short sleeved.
• Bib-shorts: Comfortable and designed for cycling. Don’t try new shorts for the first time on a long ride.
• Water Bottles/Hydration System: Carry sufficient water to stay hydrated. We recommend starting with at least two 500ml bottles. Top up at feed stations.

Bike Repair & Maintenance:
• Multi-tool: For minor adjustments and repairs.
• Spare tubes: A necessity for flat tyres.
• Tyre levers: To remove and replace tyres.
• Tape, patches, rubber bungs: For patching damaged tubeless tyres.
• Chain links or quick links: For fixing a broken chain.
• Pump: For inflating tires (carry a mini-pump or mini electric pump), track pump for pre-ride top-up.
• Chain lube/degreaser: For keeping your chain running smoothly. Optional for very wet days.
Clothing & Weather Protection:
• Layering: Consider a thermal skull cap, short sleeve base layer, long sleeve base layer, short sleeve jersey, long sleeve jersey/jacket, and waterproof/breathable rain cape. Carry extra layers, especially if the weather is cold, wet or windy.
• Arm and leg warmers: more protection options
• Casual clothing: For after the ride. Comfortable and loose fitting.

Other Essentials:
• Food: Bring energy bars, gels, or other snacks to keep your energy levels up. Bars and bananas available at feed stations. Several village tea rooms also available.
• Navigation: Route plan, emergency contact numbers, gpx file downloaded and uploaded to navigational device.
• Phone: With a plastic bag/cover to protect it from sweat and rain.
• ID and emergency contact details: In case of an accident.
• Cash and Debit Card: For unexpected expenses. Cash for village tearooms, where cash is necessary.
• Personal Care Items: Sunscreen, lip balm, etc.
• Printed registration form: For sign-on.

Tips for Packing:
• Pack the night before: This ensures you don't forget anything essential.
• Double-check details: Make sure you have the correct route and event information.
• Arrive early: To avoid rushing and get settled in.
