The Cyclone Festival of Cycling is delighted to announce a new partnership with Newcastle Hospitals Charity. The charity has been named the official lead charity partner for this year’s Cyclone Festival.

Newcastle Hospitals Charity is the dedicated charity of Newcastle Hospitals. It raises vital funds to improve the health and wellbeing of patients, staff, and local communities across the region, helping to tackle health inequalities.

Teri Bayliss, charity director at Newcastle Hospitals Charity, said: “We are delighted to be the lead charity partner for this year’s Cyclone Festival of Cycling. This is an incredibly special partnership for Newcastle Hospitals Charity after such a tough time during the pandemic when fundraising opportunities have been limited.

“As a charity, we are keen advocates for improving community and staff health through exercise, as well as championing the benefits of cycling to help us all be a bit greener and reduce air pollution – a key factor in reducing respiratory conditions.”

The charity hopes to encourage people to get involved and ride in support of its funds, which include the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and the Great North Children’s Hospital Foundation. It has discounted places available for members of the public to take part in the distance rides and hopes to encourage supporters of all ages to take to their bikes for the family ride on Friday 24 June.

The family ‘Tyne 6 Bridges’ ride is a gentle, evening ride, along flat riverside trails offering two routes of 10.5 miles and 15 miles. Both routes are ideal for those who want a leisurely and fun cycling experience and perfect for occasional cyclists or those who want to ride with young families.

The Cyclone Challenge Rides take place on Saturday 25 June with four stunning routes that take riders into Northumberland's quiet, unspoilt and spectacular landscapes. The event's lead sponsor is St Mary's Inn.

Peter Harrison, Cyclone Festival founder and organiser said: “It’s great to be welcoming Newcastle Hospitals Charity as our lead charity partner. When I set up the Cyclone, two of my main aims were to encourage cycling in the local community and create fundraising opportunities for local charities. Working together, we will be able to give both these goals a huge boost.”

Dame Jackie Daniel, chief executive at Newcastle Hospitals said: “I’m delighted to see Newcastle Hospitals Charity partnering with the Cyclone Festival of Cycling for their exciting 2022 events. We have a lot of dedicated cyclists on staff already, so we’re sure we’ll see them raring to take part!

“This charity partnership is also a fantastic fit with the wider sustainability goals throughout the Trust - we remain committed to our goal of becoming a net zero carbon organisation by 2030. Encouraging cycling as a greener mode of transport is a practical way, we can all help tackle the climate emergency.”

Newcastle Hospitals is home to a keen cycling community of staff and Newcastle Hospitals Charity recently funded the construction of new cycle hubs at the Freeman Hospital, Royal Victoria Infirmary and Regent Point to further encourage the health and environmental benefits of cycling among staff - as well as patients, and the wider community.
